Your feet say a lot about you. If you have been ignoring the appearance of your feet till now, it’s time to start paying attention.

Well-kept feet boost the confidence and enhance the personality of a person.

Pedicure, as you know, is a cosmetic treatment which keeps your feet and toenails in good shape. It’s not something new; people have been pedicuring their feet for thousands of years.

The history of pedicure goes far back to the Babylonian era. Pedicure is mostly popular among women.

The best part about pedicuring is that you don’t have to visit a spa or a nail saloon. You can do a pedicure and get beautiful feet at home as well.

Here’s a step-by-step process that you can follow to do pedicure yourself and save yourself both time and money.

Basic Supplies You’ll Need

Before you actually get started with pedicuring, there are a couple of things you should keep at hand.

Here’s a quick list:

  • Foot scrub
  • Nail clipper
  • Cuticle pusher
  • Nail file
  • Foot file
  • Nail scrubber
  • Nail polish remover
  • Cuticle cream
  • Towel
  • Moisturizer
  • Cotton pads

You’ll most probably have most of these at home.

Each of these items is easily available and you can get them quickly from the market. You’ll need them every time you do a pedicure yourself.

Step #1: Get Your Nails Ready

First of all, you need to remove the pre-existing nail polish. Use the nail polish remover to get it done.

Unless old nail polish is removed, it will be hard to add new colour on top of it.

Now, trim your nails. Using a nail cutter, you can easily clip your nails to make them look neat and pleasing.

If you are a first-timer, you may need some tips in this regard. So, keep in mind to cut your nails straight and to the right length.

Make sure you don’t cut the corners of your nails too deep, as it will result in the growth of ingrown nails.

When the edge of your nail grows into the surrounding skin, it often leads to pain, redness and and swelling.

After you have trimmed the nails, it’s time for filing. Using a nail file, give a beautiful shape to your nails.

Just remember to move the file in a single direction so as not to weaken the nails.

Step #2: Soak Your Feet

Fill a tub with warm water. You may also want to add Epsom salt and essential oil for relaxation.

After a hard and tiring day, soaking your feet in warm water is a great way of loosening yourself up.

Epsom salt is known for its properties to soften skin and relieve any kind of inflammations that it may have.

It adds shine to the skin and also exfoliates the skin.

Just adding half a cup of Epsom salt to the water will do the job. Essential oil, on the other hand, has a calming effect on the nerves.

If you want to have the feeling of getting pedicured in a spa, you should definitely add a few drops of essential oil to the water in the tub.

Now, soak your feet completely in the warm, fragrant water. Let your feet soak for at least 15 minutes.

Soaking in this way will soften the tough calluses and remove dirt while softening the nails.

Dry your feet with a clean towel.

Step #3: Scrub Your Feet

After feet soaking is done, it’s time to give your feet a good scrubbing so that rough, dry and dead skin go away.

Take some cuticle cream and apply it to the root of your toenails. A little massage will soften the skin.

Once the skin has been softened, use a foot file to remove the hard and dead skin.

Now take the cuticle cream off, and using a cuticle pusher, push the cuticles. Instead of cutting your cuticles, remove them gently with the help of cuticle remover cream.

This ensures the growth of new nails. Also, scrub your nails with a nail scrubber.

Now, take a foot scrub and give your heels, ankles and soles a good, gentle scrubbing.

Don’t skip the areas between the toes. After you are done with scrubbing, rinse off and wipe your feet with a towel.

Step #3: Moisturize Your Feet

Post-cleaning, it’s time to moisturize your feet.

Applying moisturizer to your feet will bring a feeling of freshness. Take some moisturizer and massage all the areas of your feet.

Spend at least 5-10 minutes doing it. After cleaning your feet, you can also give them a good massage using olive oil or almond oil or a mixture of both.

Massaging your feet in this way will improve blood circulation and give your skin a healthy look and shine.

Once you are done massaging, add a base coat (a clear nail polish) on your toenails for a great nail polish job later.

Step #4: Fancy Up Your Nails

Since you have already applied a base coat to your toenails, you are ready to add a nail polish color of your choice.

Pick a nail polish color you like most or one which goes well with the dress you’re going to wear. While painting, start in the centre and move your brush towards the tip.

Make your brush strokes longer for a beautiful, uniform tone. Paint each one of your toenails in this way.

When the nail polish color has been applied, look for and remove any bits of polish which might have gotten on to the skin, using a fingernail. Add a second layer of paint and then leave it to dry for a few minutes.

Give your toenails a final stroke of polish.

After you’re done dressing up your toenails with nail polish color, give it enough time to dry.

After 15-20 minutes, the nail polish will dry up completely and leave a smooth finish.

Now, you’re all set to go out and show off your eye-catching toenails and well-groomed feet.

Now that you’ve learned how to do a pedicure at home, do you really need to visit a nail salon on a regular basis?
